| Objective: To provide ancient theoretical basis for disease spectrum and clinical application of Hegu(LI 4) acupoint by summarizing and analyzing the descriptions of Hegu(LI 4) acupoint from ancient medical literatures. And to provide reference for the study of acupuncture appropriate conditions about acupoints.Methods: Using "Chinese Medical Classics" published by electronic audio-visual publishing houses in Hunan as our database source, "Hegu", "Hukou" and "siguan" as index words, got the relevant clauses referring to the descriptions of Hegu(LI 4) acupoint.Then sorted the descriptions into two categories, the descriptions involving Hegu(LI 4) acupoint alone and the descriptions involving Hegu(LI 4) acupoint with other acupoints. Then inputted the descriptions into the computer to set up a database, reanalyzed the data, and attributed them to 7 major disease systems, such as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and orthopedic of TCM.Result: There were 1539 clauses in 692 chapters about 120 books left after sifting the ancient medical literature.194 clauses about 79 books were related to the descriptions involving Hegu acupoint alone and 1345 clauses about 102 books were related to the descriptions involving Hegu acupoint with other acupoints. There are 45 kinds of diseases suitable for applying the Hegu acupoint alone and 127 kinds of diseases suitable for applying the Hegu acupoint with other acupoints. After eliminating 38 kinds of repetitive diseases, there are 134 kinds of diseases which can be treated by Hegu acupoint.Conclusion: There are 134 kinds of diseases which can be treated by Hegu acupoint.There are 14 advantage diseases which can be treated by Hegu acupoint alone while there are 33 advantage diseases which can be treated by Hegu acupoint with other acupoints. In addition, 33 kinds of commom compatibility acupoints of Hegu acupoint are provided for clinical.
