Objective1. The purpose of this study was to measure the status of medical workplce violence.2. To analyze the influence of medical workplace violence on job burnout, and to investigate the relationship between medical workplace violence and job burnout among hospital staffs in general hospitals.3. To analyze the influence of medical workplace violence on sub-health, and to investigate the relationship between medical workplace violence and sub-health among hospital staffs in general hospitals.MethodsSix general hospitals were selected by cluster sampling method. Doctors and nurses who were sampled randomly were questionaired by four parts which were personnal basic information, explosure to violence, job burnout and sub-health. The results of questionnaire were entered into computer with Visual Foxpro6.0software. Data was analyzed by SPSS13.0statistics software. Incidence and composition were used to describe the status of medical workplace violence. Incidence and composition ratio were compared by chi-square test; Scores of various dimensions of job burnout and sub-health were described by mean±standard deviation. Independent-Samples T Test were used for comparison of two samples mean. One-Way ANOVA was used in the comparison of groups mean. The level of significance was0.05.Results1. The status of medical workplace violence46.1%participants suffered workplace violence. Medical staffs who were30to40years old age, bachelor degree or above and in outpatient and emergency departments suffered violence more (P<0.05); Medical staff of different gender, age, occupation, education, and department of medical workplace violence suffered form the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The difference of medical workplce violence forms among different gender, age, occupation, education, and department were statistically significant (P<0.05). Perpetrators were mainly relatives of patients; And the leading reasons of perpetration were long time waiting or waiting for treatment. The main coping style towards violence was to reason with each other.2. The relationship between violence and job burnout The difference of exhaustion and cynicism scores of job burnout between hospital staffs who suffered hospital violence and those without hospital violence experience was statistically significant (P<0.05). The difference of cynicism scores between different sources of violence was statistically significant (P<0.05). Scores of cynicism and professional efficacy in job burnout between different coping style were statistically difference (P<0.05).3. The relationship between violence and sub-health The difference of physiological, psychological and social function scores of sub-health between hospital staffs who suffered hospital violence and those without hospital violence experience was statistically significant (P<0.05). The difference of three dimensions of sub-health scores between different sources and coping styles of violence was statistically significant (P<0.05).ConclusionMedical workplace violence has become a global social problem, which can lead to extreme tiredness and loss of working enthusiasm. Medical workplace violence do harmful to medical staff’s health and is the significant occupation risk factors of medical staffs job burnout and sub-health. Therefore, the government and society as well as internal hospital, medical professionals themselves should take effective measures to reduce the medical workplace violence incidence and improve the medical staffs job burnout and sub health state, which is conducive not only to improve the quality of medical service, but also conducive to promote the harmonious development of society.
