Chionanthus retusa Lindl et Paxt, one of the plant of the genus is Chionanthus(Oleaceae) is one of the very important and commonly used as a folk medicine inChinese. The fringed leaves and flowers of Chionanthus retusa Lindl et Paxt was usedin the folk tea drinking for the prevention and treatment of chronic liver disease. Thereis no reported on the chemical constituents of the flowers of Chionanthus retusa. Tofind new effective from this plant, phytochemistry studies were carrying out on theextract of this plant.By repeated column chromatography, including Silica gel, Sephadex LH-20,Toyopearl HW-40C and preparative HPLC,12compounds were separated from theEtOH extract of C. retusa. The structures of8compounds were identified by means of1H-NMR,13C-NMR,2D-NMR and ESI-MS spectra.(+)-epipinoresinol (1), Luteolin(2),Apigenin(3),7-O-beta-D luteolin glucoside(4), Ursolic acid(5),3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoicacid(6),3,4-dihydroxybenzoicacid(7),3,4-Dihydroxy phenylethanol (8). Allthe compounds were firstly separated from the flower of C. retusa.Using the method of steam distillation, the volatile oil in the flowers of C. retusawas extracted. And the chemical constituents of the volatile oil was analysised by theGC–MS.60compounds were identified by the computer retrieval, which accountedfor97.88%of the total, the main compounds of which are benzene methanol (4.5%),benzene ethanol (9.7%), the methoxy benzene ethanol (32.1%), and ketone (6.01%),ring twenty-one (alkyl4.5%), twenty-one (11.34%) alkyl.Through the Chionanthus retusa and chemical composition of volatile oil ofChionanthus retusa, on the future exploitation and utilization is of great significance.
