Nursing facilities for the elderly are facilities that cater to the medicalneeds of elderly people who require constant nursing care and have significantdeficiencies with activities of daily living. With the dramatic increase ofaging population, the demand for long-term care services will surge. However,lack of standards and guidelines in construction lead to the uneven quality ofelderly nursing facilities in China. This article makes a research on buildingfunctional spaces of nursing facilities for the elderly.Firstly, it studied the development of nursing facilities in United Statesand Japan. Based on the references and cases of the two countries, this articledescribed the typical feature of building functions and spatial allocations, thensummarized the trends of nursing facilities in developed countries.Secondly, a series of investigations have been carried out as to theexisting facilities in urban areas in China. Through the analysis of randomsampling and spot investigation, the article analyzed the behaviorcharacteristics of both elderly residences and staff, and their demands.Thirdly, by comparing the current functions and spatial characteristics ofthose in developed countries and China, the article discussed factors thataffect the configuration of functional space, then provided a functional spacemode which is suitable for the situation of our country.Finally, according to the above findings, the composition and size offunctional spaces are decided, and the dimensions of certain functional spacesare given for reference.
