As a construction that most closely connected to human life, residence reveals how different nations survive and thrive at different times and under different environments, reflecting people’s conception on the economy, culture, production, life, ethics, customs, religious beliefs, and philosophic and aesthetic ideas.Residences, both constructively solid and mentally comfortable, are physical entities that combine natural and artistic beauties in a particular spatial-temporal environment. Pursuant to its natural and geographical conditions, cultural background and economic development, the Huizhou regional ancient residence demonstrates the architectural and indoor decoration arts from the "Hui-regional culture" in southern Anhui Province. The residence architectural skills and aesthetic values reflected, through ingenious spatial layout, uncompromising elegant decorative elements and furnishings of a profound and detailed expression of domestic instruments do have an impact and inspiration on modern interior designing.Visual art is a figurative language that uses different symbols, ideographic tools and sign systems to express the content of art and culture. The understanding of its linguistic features is of great importance to appreciate the art works and to explore the deeper meanings. In the realm of plastic arts, the traditional language with refer to sculpture, painting, architecture and other art categories following the general rules, expresses a unique spirit of its own meaning shaping intuitive images via the skills and techniques.Interior design is more than an artistic design, but a unique artistic language vehicle associated with the cultural content, and is a combination between spatial functionality and the art of designing, rich in artistic and decorative elements in the interior space design. Today the application of traditional elements in the indoor design is commonplace, but the modern indoor design laid huge emphasis on how to make better use of dwelling elements to express the cultural connotation contained.The profound history and rich cultural heritage of the Huizhou Region endowed its ancient houses with unique cultural background and a special charisma consisted of nature, antiquity and elegance. This paper will first analyze the geographic and natural conditions of the Huizhou ancient dwellings, as well as the history and traditional customs; second, it will introduce the theory of visual art language, paving ways for the later induction of the ancient houses; and third, it will make detailed research on the visual art language embodied in the Huizhou ancient houses. Through analyses of the basic elements and design principles of the dwellings, we could generalize its visual art language, exploring its inner grammatical relationship and features in order to understand the symbol systems of the visual art language. Fourth, through aspects of figurative rules, subconscious and aesthetic accomplishment, the paper tries to analyze the aesthetic thinking expressed as the geographical culture, so that we obtain abilities of deep reflection and regeneration of language structure. Finally, combining the concept of modern indoor design and the prevailing aesthetic trend, the paper does its humble best in inheriting national culture and carrying forward the core spirit inside, and tries to apply its design law into modern indoor design, creating interior space that is full of cultural and the aesthetic conceptions.
