As an important part of excellent ancient buildings in China and the prominent carrier of Hui culture,Huizhou traditional dwellings have a profound cultural connotation and distinctive local characteristics. With the rapid development of social progress and national standard of living, the indoor thermal environment of traditional dwellings in winter is no longer able to meet the needs of modern people.Based on the study of Huizhou traditional dwellings' characteristics and the formation mechanism of indoor thermal environment in winter,a solution are proposed to optimize the transformation of the traditional dwellings, which is significance for the development of modern architecture, and also the best inheritance for the Huizhou traditional dwellings.Three main ways are applied in this paper to investigate Huizhou traditional dwellings are found in this paper, those are finding of passive design experience, understanding of indoor thermal environment formation mechanism and optimization design of traditional houses, respectively.Besides the pure studies on thermal environment, this paper also shows the characteristics and design concept of Huizhou traditional dwellings,so that the passive techniques which modern building can be adapted can be revealed.Field measurement was conducted in a representative Huizhou traditional dwelling, and it was found that the dwelling is cold and wet in winter, the room temperature is maintained between 6.0~9.0 ?,and relative humidity(RH)is maintained between 80%~88%.The main reason of poor indoor thermal environment is that the performance of both building envelope insulation and air tightness is performing poorly.Based on the field measurement in winter, the heat flow through different kinds of building construction was calculated,it is found that the nature ventilation and the heat transfer through building envelope are the major causes of building heat loss in winter. In addition, solar heat gain from the patio is an important source of indoor heat gain.In order to reduce the heat loss and strengthen the heat gain of the existing building, several optimization schemes were proposed,The building and the optimal schemes were modeled using TRNSYS software. It is turned out that indoor temperature under the optimal schemes can be increased over 4.6 ? compared to that of the original building, and the probability of indoor temperature kept at comfortable zone is over 32%.Therefore,the combined transformation of dwelling patio andexternal building envelope can promote a significant improvement in indoor thermal environment.
