Analysing The Process Of Urbanization And Experience In Korea

Urbanisation can be viewed as a milestone in the history of human development. It reflects the radical transformation of society due to prolific cultural and economic activities around the city core, together with the increasing global mobility through modern transportation systems. With the progress of globalisation, urbanisation will continue to evolve and to have a profound impact on both developed and developing countries, while the patterns can be different due to geographical, cultural and economic factors. Studies on the urbanisation experience of representative cities thus can have great value on culturally and geographically close countries. This paper focuses on the urbanisation process of cities in South Korea. First, it presents the analysis on the tendency of population change. Second, it summarises the typical characteristics of each stage in the urbanisation process. Finally, it addresses existed and lasting problems due to the reckless pace of urbanisation and the corresponding policies to cope with.These problems to deal with are also helpful for the other unities to summarize the beneficial experience and find their own path forward with the global urbanization.
