Historical District, which contains a city’s historical culture, is formed in the long process of urban development. As precious heritage, it reflects the city’s unique style, and is the witness of urban civilization. However, in recent years, China’s urban construction accelerated and many historical neighborhoods are impacted due to inadequate protection. The update of historical district includes two opposing processes:the update and protection, with the former seeks to adapt to changes happened in the economic structure of the city and the latter prevent the changes to protect historical buildings and neighborhoods. How to maintain historical district’s distinctive characteristics meanwhile continuously update itself? It is urgent and meaningful to find a reasonable method.Zhengzhou is one of the famous historic cities. The Academy Street, which located in the central area of the city, is a rarely extant historic district of a larger scale. It occupies a very important position in current development of Zhengzhou, and has a wealth of historical remains. At the same time the Academy Street is backed by the Shang Dynasty city wall ruins which contribute to its rich historical and cultural atmosphere. But the development of the Academy Street lags behind the city’s construction with decayed substance configuration, and obsolete infrastructure. Further more, the added construction and disordered alteration disrupted the traditional style.Firstly, the concept, features, content and relevant theory including previous research of historic district are described in this thesis which provide a theoretical background for present study. Then, the author elaborates the formation and development of the Academy Street and further analyzes its current problem and contradiction against the city’s development. Finally, detailed regulation methods and solutions are proposed with the help of organic renewal, microcirculation and other scientific theories, combined with domestic and foreign cases.
