Every city embodies its unique cultural qualities. Hstoric districts are the carrier of the culture and the history in each city Ihe streets, architecture and even the citizens represent the regional history at certaintime. With the renewal of historic districts as well as the development of the audience-orierted design philosophy, the irteraction between people and historic districts is becomng increasingly frequent. A a natter of fact, the irteraction is based on the infer nation constructed and conveyed by historic districts. Intended to generate an effective, efficient information trans nission model, this thesis is dedicated to providing a possible strategy for the development of historic districts in response to the i nproper strategies, such as commercial development destruction, artificial historic sites and static isolated protectionIn the process of historic district street irterface renewal, the key lies in the enhance ment of infor nation interaction efficiency between the designer (posing as the infernation constructor as well as the receiver) and the audience (also serve as the infor nation receiver and the constructor at the same tine) and the prevention from information bias, distortion and ni misunder standing. Built on infor nati on transmission theories, this thesis focuses on the designer’s infor nati on construction, the effective infor nation delivery and the audience’s infor nation reception The designer’s information construction is analyzed from the aspects of meaning infor nation collection, the me selection and information encoding The effective informtion deliveryis explored through the analysis on practical cases in order to summarize its pattern, principles and the influence factors. The infor nation reception is analyzed on the three levels of audience’s significance, psychological reconstruction of information, and the audience-street irterface infor nati on relation It is proved that the process of infor nation reception equals to the process of infor nation value enbodi ment. The information interaction pattern consists of three sections:information construction, delivery and receptionOn the basis of actual research on the Tanhualin district, the thesis discusses the necessity and feasibility of applying information transmission theories into the historic district street renewal by integrating theories with practice. In addition, the thesis also attempts to discover and summarize the problems caused by infor mation trans mission arising inthe reconstruction process and proposes the appropriate design strategies which balance the city development and historic, cultural heritage in the process of district renewal. The innovation of this thesis exists inthe brand newresearch perspective—infor nati-on trans missi on theories, which stressed emphasis on different recognition and experience modes according to differert subjects.
