Study Of Traditional Settlement And Residence Form Influenced By Industry Relationship

Chinese traditional culture is appreciated by people all over the world, but the traditional settlement which bears Chinese native culture is facing a crisis. From birth to promotion, the traditional settlement records people’s living and settlement derivation, and can tell us the history of settlement development. Vernacular architecture is endowed with strong regional culture characteristics due to the influence of many factors such as local climate characteristics, building material resources, customs and social culture. By the traditional settlement’s characteristics it demonstrates, we trace to its source and analyze its development and evolution process to find out the major effect factors, explore the regional cultural characteristics and summarize the features of settlement form and local architecture for the better protection, utilization and inheritance of local culture.Influenced by traditional agricultural culture, the major residence form of Chinese rural society is traditional settlement by the ties of kin, which is closed and self-supplied with keen clan idea and quiet self-sufficiency life. But there is another settlement form retained in the society which is based on the industry relationship. Settlement based on the industry relationship is a settlement pattern that traditional settlement tends to be urbanized, it has own operating system and single commercial ecology compared with urbanization settlement and is usually formed and developed on the basis of one or two kinds of handicraft industry. In addition, industry-related settlement and adjacent settlement rely on each other and trade with each other.Boshan district is located in the mountain area of central south of Shandong Province and is the gateway to northern plain areas. Boshan is rich in resources and has three pillar industries including ceramics, glass and coal which make full use of local resources. The prosperity of business activities is presented in Boshan and many industry-related settlements which are mainly engaged in handicraft industry are derived. In this paper, we took Boshan as the instance to analyze the traditional settlement and residence form influenced by local industries. Analyzing the concept and growth factors of industry-related settlements, we got the relationship between industry and settlement form, conducted a deep analysis an dig on settlement patterns and folk houses, summarized the historical and cultural value of industry-related settlements and proposed some useful considerations and suggestions.
