The Quantitative Method Of Traditional Rural Settlement Planar Form Application And Development Research

This research focuses on the application of the quantitative method of the traditional rural settlements of Dr.PU Xincheng and develops it by employing the surrounding villages of Nanjing city.There are main four chapters in this paper.Specifically,we summarize the existing quantitative methods for the settlements,supplying the basis information of the PU Xincheng’s methodology in the first chapter.The second chapter examines the PU Xincheng’s method by applying samples in Nanjing area,then an interpretation of the above empirical results and a summary of the characteristics of the quantitative techniques of villages in Nanjing are given in the next chapter.In the fourth chapter,this thesis gives suggestions for the development of the PU Xincheng’s method after comparing the advantages and disadvantages of this method.According to the related literature,methods of the settlement quantization can be divided into four types,namely,the GIS and its surrounding methods,the Space syntax and its peripheral studies,the Cellular automata and the Wang Yun and PU Xincheng’s method and self-organizing mapping feature network.This paper gives a brief introduction about above-mentioned technologies including the origins,basic concepts and the ultimate goals,etc.,and makes a literature review of these methods.It illustrates that there is still a great potential room to improve the research of the quantification method in China.Moreover,we find that the PU Xincheng’s method has good scalability as it can ease the operation in reality and analyse villages the comprehensively and accurately.This study empirically analyses the villages in Nanjing area by applying the PU Xincheng’s method.It organizes basic data and generates related forms and graphs,providing the preparations for the following chapter.For the data in the external side-line,they include the settlement form index,the density of the settlement boundary and the width of the settlement boundary while three parts compose the internal sample: the information about residential settlement,the settlement public space and the structure of the settlement.To be specific,the information about the residential settlement includes the building density,the average living area and its disorder,and the inner courtyard space.In the analysis of the public space,the method of PU Xincheng is used to measure the spatial distribution of the public space.Then,in the third section,there are two main aspects: the orientation of the settlement and the spacing between the settlements.This research provides a more accurate application way of the settlement form index and settlement edges after the comparison analysis via interpreting quantitative characteristics of external boundary of 19 villages in Nanjing area.As for the internal aspects of the settlement,this paper studies not only the residence,public space and the structure numerically but also the internal data of the settlement,combining with the rates of the courtyard ownership and the public space which are proposed in this paper.Last,the data of both internal and external parts are integrated and analysed.Next,we review the advantages and disadvantages of the PU Xincheng’s method and investigate the difficulties of describing the shape index of external boundary for human settlements in the method development section.This thesis proposes a relatively easy way of understanding the boundary length allowing for the fact that Pu Xincheng’s method needs too many pre-requirements and brings issues of conceptual understanding during use.In this paper,the method of the proportion of the unit public space is explained and the average area of residential public space is applied to express the complexity of the internal space aiming at addressing the issue of understanding of the dimension of internal public space.Next,this paper gives the advantage of the analysis of the practical problems.In the end,we briefly introduce two groups of this study which are used to measure the use method and notes of the GH computing device which is used to measure the distance between settlements and settlements.The last part concludes significances of this paper.We propose the side-line ratio using to describe the settlement form,the public space of the household and the ownership rate of the courtyard.Moreover,we advance the existing method by generating the Grsshopper diagram,making up the technical loophole in the original method.Additionally,we discuss the shortcomings of this paper and give a direction for further research: the centrality of settlement and the direction of 3d height.
