Nursing unit is the basic element of a ward building. It is a relatively independent functional area with its own system. Usually it consists of a certain number of wards, a set of equipped medical workers, related medical facilities, accessory and traffic space. The quality of nursing unit design has an important effect on the treatment of patients and their rehabilitation process. The nursing unit in inpatient department plays an important role in the hospital architectural design, this is because it takes a large proportion in the gross area of a hospital and it has a very close contact with other departments. The layout type, different combinations of internal rooms and streamline of nursing unit all directly influence the whole operational efficiency of a hospital and the nurses’working efficiency. With the development of medicine and concept of hospital architectural design, the design of nursing unit is also under development, which appears new trend.This paper takes nursing unit in modern comprehensive hospital as research object based on architecture, environmental psychology and sociology. It analyzes elements, space design and streamline of nursing unit in detail based on investigation to its current situation. It also discusses the existing limitations of current design and usage of nursing unit on the basis of its own characteristics and design features. From the point of view of architectural design, this paper puts forward some solutions and makes analysis on future development tendency of nursing unit in order to make better hospital architectural design.
