| Different from the transformation and design of ordinary urbanrivers, the landscape design of ancient canal is special because of its richhistorical and cultural accumulation. In this paper, the Grand Canal inZhenjiang is chosen as the study object, and the study covers the wholeprocess that is from landscape design to construction. On the basis ofliterature collection and the study of similar cases, the design concept andthe overall layout are formed through the investigation, analysis andevaluation of natural resources and cultural resources. The application ofmodern engineering technology like ecological revetment gives the canallandscape in Zhenjiang characteristics of local culture. The study canprovide reference for the landscape creation of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, even for the ordinary riparian landscape design. It also can be an examplefor similar domestic waterfront landscape construction.Through the study, three conclusions are drawn as below:(1) By collating information and field survey, and carding status quoof the construction of the waterfront landscape at home and abroad, thepaper summed up the experience for reference. Both the domestic andinternational waterfront canal landscape transformation lie in its functionand the landscape. Different from ordinary waterfront landscape, canallandscape is shaped with unique culture, and the urban canal landscape shows different cultural characteristics.(2)Through detailed investigation and analysis of land use, hydrology, vegetation, municipal facilities and cultural sites of the ancientcanal in Zhenjiang, the design goal is determined with the purpose oflinking the hills in south with water in north, activating urban forests, andoptimizing travel pattern, and structural layout is decided by building onesquare, two strips, three parks, four bridges and five docks.(3) In accordance with the design concept, the landscape materialelements such as vegetation, buildings, ornament, road venue arerespectively designed and the theories of cultural space and associationare employed to integrate the cultural and material elements of theancient canal in Zhenjiang. The design enriches the revetment types ofthe canal landscape, and shows how the technology of ecologicalrevetment is applied in the canal landscape. |
