Water is one of the vital natural elements, which not only brings the vigor and vitalityfor the surrounding environment, also can give the wonderful psychological experience topeople. The biggest advantage of the waterfront district is the abundant hydrophilicelement that can provide the opportunity and the place of closing water for visitors.So theurban waterfront space is always people ‘s yearning and gathered area.In the urban waterfront environment, what is the effect and value of emotional designfor people and the whole city? What kinds of elements lead us to add emotional designideas in the urban waterfront design? How to carry on the emotional design to meet ourrequirements? All the above are the concern of the topic.Based on the three levels (visceral, behavioral and reflective level) mentioned in thebook of Emotional Design form Professor Donald Arthur Norman, this paper provides thetheory and the instruction for the emotional design of the urban waterfront environment,refers to the relative cross discipline theory such as environmental psychology andbehavioristics, takes the urban waterfront environment as the subject research scope, andgives the Fisherman’s Wharf of Xiaojiang Sight from Changsha city as the example, anduses the method of emotional design to research and analyze such example in terms ofdesign methods.In the first part of this paper, the author introduces the origin of the topic, relatedconcepts, the current situation of subject research and the author’s research scope andmethods.In the second part, the author primarily introduces the relationship among theemotion, people and value, the effect of emotional design to people as well as the threelevels of emotional design (visceral, behavioral and reflective level), all of which are thewhole theoretical foil of the subject of paper.In the third part, the author expects to probes into the important position of the urbanwaterfront environment in the city and the necessity of using of emotional design, byelaborating characteristics of the urban waterfront environment, analyzing all kinds ofvalues for the city and people bought by the urban waterfront environment and giving consideration to people’s all kinds of demands for the urban waterfront environment.In the fourth part, mainly aim to the space of the urban waterfront environmentnowadays, the author enumerates some common problems to discuss the solution.In the fifth part,through using the related theory and method of emotional design,and connecting with the related subject’s knowledge such as environmental psychologyand behavioristics, the author discusses the space and the design of the space facilities ofthe urban waterfront environment.In the last part, by analyzing two classic foreign urban waterfront environments(Aker Wharf, Baltimore Port) and take the fisherman’s wharf of Xiaoxiang Sight fromChangsha city as example, the author shows all kinds of performance of emotional design.
