Research Of Settlement Patterns On The Yi’anfortress

‘Vernacularity’ is the grassroots foundation of Chinese society, on thebasis of that ancient cultural inheritance comes from the history. Residence isan important link to keep up with the original culture. Traditional village,usually being seen as a vector of vernacular culture, is also a carrier ofcomprehension to patriarchal society and farming-reading culture. To carryout the study on ancient residence, it is not only to research on its using value,but also the cultural connotation and aesthetic value.On the basis of thorough investigation, survey, mapping production andrelated cultural and historical documents, the architectural form and culture ofYi’an fortress have been analyzed in this issue through performing three studylevels, there are: location, configuration of village and single building. Thedefensiveness of Yi’an fortress was also studied. Meanwhile, the internalpsychological factors and clan characteristics of settlement culture have beenreached in this thesis in order to contribute a more clearly sight of view.Firstly, relevant research theory had been elaborated and some relatedconcept such as settlement, settlement form and defensive settlement weredefined. Through summarizing the domestic research on traditional settlement,the research method has been clarified and obtained. Foreign research ontradition settlement and defensive settlement research was also included.Then general situation of traditional residence settlement in Yi’anfortress was presented. The author tried to hackle the culture background ofYi’an fortress by illustrating selected location condition, location environment,culture and historical background.On the basis of that, architectural factors such as location features,geomantic structure, village arrangement, river system and street weresummarized and analyzed in this paper. As an national heritage conservationunits, Yi’an fortress is because of avoiding being ruined and destroyed, so thedefense system is well organized, so the whole defense system was noticed and considered as an important element to be researched in the thesis.On researching its defensive system is mainly based on its characteristic:combined with linear defensive setting on periphery and point defensivesetting in part of the area. In order to explain its spiritual connotation whichentity defense and psychological defense were integrated and workedtogether.The clan culture connotation was researched at historical view ofpatriarchal clan system. The ancestor hall, which was the core of patriarchalclan system, was considered as the link to analyze the characteristics of clanculture and the organization of clan field and school. The relative blockingcondition was a key point to preserve the clan culture of Yi’an fortress.(Andthe thesis explained that the whole clan culture within its building has beenpreserved is because of its luck of communication with the outside of theworld.)...
