The intersection of the urban traffic network is the bottleneck of the whole traffic network’s capacity and the source point of traffic accidents. After overviewing the study in the world on the traffic control for intersections, the thesis puts forward the significance and necessity of the traffic signal control, gives the method and step of single point control and coordinated control of traffic signal intersection, and designs a FPGA implementation of the traffic signal coordination control system.Firstly the thesis introduces the concept and applicability of two kinds of traffic signal control type, i.e., timing control and induction control, followed by the concept of the main parameters of the traffic signal coordination control. Then, it discusses the design method of single intersection traffic signal control scheme. After that, it describes the design method and steps of traffic signal coordinated control scheme of the main city road, using the calculated timing plans of four intersections of Shengtai Road’s main line coordinated control as the basis of the FPGA program design. The thesis also introduces the technologies of FPGA chip, VHDL language and MAX+PLUS Ⅱ software. Based on this, it gives the detailed design process of the FPGA program for four intersections on Shengtai Road’s traffic signal coordinated control system. The process includes an analysis of the design task, a design on the top system scheme, definitions of input signal and the output signal, and a blueprint of the top architecture. According to the classification of functional modules, implemented by VHDL, each source program is input, compiled and simulated. And the top principle figure is input, compiled, simulated, downloaded and validated. Finally, a summary and the further research is put forward.
