Coupled space refers to secondary space or auxiliary space which exists in hall buildings. It changes acoustic characteristic such as reverberation time and sound-energy decay for the extension of building volume. Apply these characteristics in actual projects could makes the hall of functional diversification, satisfy the different demand, improve the utilization rate and reduce operating costs which has important significance in pay attention to conservation and sustainable development of the current society. The project that setting coupled space as a method of adjustable reverberation time design realization to improve the acoustic quality is not common in China. But adjustable design is the current development direction with the convergence of Chinese and international. It also is the main reason which drives the author choose this topic. This paper can be generally divided into two parts from the structure. The first part enumerates and researches the hall buildings with adjustable reverberation time which has been built at foreign countries from the angle of applying coupled space to actual project design, and on this basis in-depth analyses the technique, method and some problems that should be paid attention to of the adjustable reverberation time design practical application. The second part use Odeon acoustic design software and acoustic measuring instrument in combination with actual projects to research, to analyse and modify the design through the virtual modeling calculation way, to attempt design on the arrangement of the coupled rooms in an adjustable reverberation time hall and to forecast the design result with the software simulation. The full text in purpose of "extracting experience-analysis hypothesis-experimental verification" to research the topic and puts forward some personal opinion for reference.
