The research mainly studied on rural settlements in Jinhua city. Combined with the use of GIS technology by the use of the image recognition and field validation this paper received spatial information on rural settlements, and quantitatively analyzed spatial clustering characteristics of rural settlements in Jinhua with GIS spatialanalysis methods. It also classified rural settlements in the region summarized and analyzed spatial clustering characteristics, rules of rural settlements. The results showed that water, roads, terrain, population growth industrial structure change and other factors had a major impact on gathering space of the rural settlements. Through this study, the conclusions were as follows:(1) According to the morphology of rural settlements, rural settlements in Jinhua City can be divided into four types:linear settlement, step-type settlement, group-type settlements and scatter settlements. And linear settlements can be divided into the formation that was along the river water along the valley edge. Group-type settlements can be divided into two classifications that was around the pond and around the central square or functional building settlements.(2).VCM of rural settlements in Jinhua City showed the first peak occurred at the radius of900m, a second peak at the radius of1200m,which reflected the buffer radius of the rural settlements was900m and at the radius of1200m was in the highest degree.(3) With the increase of the stream buffer radius, the number of rural settlements was gradually decreasing, and the farther distance away from the river system, the less the rural settlement. When the river buffer radius increased to 1000m, the cumulative percentage of the number of rural settlements was81.4%, which indicated rural settlements mainly distributed within1000m away from the water, namely1000m is the ideal radius for the people’s produce and life.(4) With the increase in the radius of the road buffer, the gathering of rural settlements rules were similar to the water system, but both the importance had a slight difference in different sizes under the geographical space. From the results of the study, when the rural settlements located near the water system and roads (buffer radius<500m), rural settlements showed more pronounced along the road than along the river system; and in the longer distances (buffer radius>500m), rural settlements gathered more along the river system than along the road.(5) From the view of topographic, with the increasing altitude, the distribution of rural settlement gradually reduced. Meanwhile, rural settlements gradually reduced with the increasing topographic gradient. Overall rural settlements gradually reduced with the increasing elevation. But under certain conditions, the distribution of rural settlements was more inclined to the choice of slope, and the aspect also had an important impact on the distribution of rural settlements.(6) In terms of human factors analysis, population growth and industrial structure change in the different social periods had an important impact on the rural settlements. Before the founding, the one of the main reasons for the formation and development of the rural settlement was the growth of population giving pressure on land was, which prompted some population of the rural settlement to migrate to the other places that gradually formed a new settlement. Most was due to population migration because of war and other factors which formatted new rural settlements. After the founding, the settlement pattern of change is often the layout with the urbanization process and the Government’s planning guidance. In addition to the above, the change and adjustment of industrial structure in the different periods also had a significant impact on the gathering of rural settlements.
