Strategy Of Urban Design For Characteristic

Our country has been in a stage of rapid urbanization development from Reform andOpening up. During this period，most of the historical area was greatly damaged.We can`t seethe landscapes because of excessive exploitation. The characteristic of cities tends to the same.The original characteristic has been suffering serious damage, and the new characteristic isless than promising.In this context, this paper asks the question by the ideas of phenomenon-question-criticism–target in the first chapter. Chapter II analyzes the development and formation of theurban characteristics by historical and comparative research, summarizes the property, types,space vector, material composition, crisis and reason of the urban characteristic.Chapter III proposes a view that urban design is the core method to create a city’scharacteristic compared with urban planning, architecture and landscape design, and describesthe relationships between urban design and characteristic in the way of objectives, approach,scope, elements. Summed up the relationships between the elements of urban design and fourkinds of characteristics.The fourth chapter presents strategies based on urban characteristic. The macro level iscomprehensive urban design with the target of the master plan. The middle level is urbandesign of three key areas. The micro level is design of landmark nodes and environmentalfacilities. The strategy of comprehensive urban design is contacting the old city and the newcity, unicomming mountains and rivers, and giving the symbolic meaning. The strategy ofhistoric districts is protection for the architectural style and public space, and encouragingregional architectural design. The strategy of mountain-front and Water-front district iscontrolling elements of land use, gallery, skyline and building size to reflect the existingnatural landscape characteristic, and creating the new landscape pattern. The strategy of thekey areas in new urban district is building distinctive tall buildings areas and public spaces.The strategy of the micro level is shaping the landmark nodes and environmental facilities. Inthe end, this paper proposes the institutional guarantee of building urban characteristics:Establishing the legal protection system and advocating moderate centralization.
