Community Spatial Form&Neighborhood Communication

The main content of this thesis is the space of neighborhood communication activities in residential area. Social development leads to a crisis in modern neighborhood communication, due to modern residential development pattern. What are the inner relationships between architectural space and neighborhood intercourse? How to change the cold status in neighborhood relationship?The thesis tries to make a basic discussion on the relations of space and activities, based on the theory of environment and behavior. Through research on open space of traditional towns, neighborhood communication behaviors are divided into4individual levels, Indoor-outdoor transition, Near-Neighborhood sharing, Medium-Neighborhood contact, and Total-Neighborhood communication. Different level of communication has its own requirement on spatial form.The basic character of communication space has not been changed by the development from traditional towns to modern residential communities. But the importance of each level has some differences due to social background. Designing of communication space should be more specific, not just an indefinite idea of public space.In the end, some expectations about communication space development in the future are discussed, in order to bring some thoughts for further research in this area.
