The intermediate station is the largest number of high-speed railway station which plays an important role in the economic development of cities along the railway line. Passenger flow varies in time and space along the railway line. In some large metropolitan areas, a certain number of passenger trains have to be arranged to receive or departure intensively in peak hours. the design method of the intermediate turning-back station have not been stipulated in the current high-speed railway technical specifications. To ensure the effective delivery of passengers and take full advantage of Electric Multiple Units (EMU), it’s necessary to operate turning-back trains when working out the passenger train diagram. In order to avoid that the intercrossing of train operations in throat district would become the restriction point of whole line in the future. To reduce the effective of receive or departure and ensure the station orderly and efficient operation, it is necessary to do the study on pattern layout and characteristics of Intermediate stations with turning-back operations. Because of the certain limitation on learning from urban mass transit intermediate turning-back station directly, we should analyze the characteristics of high-speed intermediate turning-back railway station and turning-back modes, presenting the high-speed intermediate turning-back railway station layouts.The paper illustrates the current research status at home and abroad, proposing the thesis objectives, contents and methods. This paper analyzes the layouts of the urban mass transit intermediate turning-back station, turning-back mode and the adaptability of its adaptability of station layout. combined with the characteristics of high-speed railway station layout, the paper puts forward the high-speed railway intermediate turning-back station layout, summarizing the variety of turning-back modes, the contents and process of operations and relevant time standards.The paper abstracts track layout into a network with poly-source and poly-terminal and proposes graph and network method, taking the throat and track as a directed network and establishing the list of turn-backing routes. Firstly, maximizing the route effect as the first optimization objective, and considering maximizing arrival-departure tracks effect as the second optimization objective, with some constraints as follows: the selection of routes, the constraints of trains occupying arrival-departure tracks, the constraints of trains occupying turnout and the compatibility constraints of tracks. This model describes the practical problem accurately, which are suitable for researching on the theoretical basis for the simulation of the intermediate turning-back station. Finally, the paper analyzes capacity of the intermediate turning-back station using the way of direct calculation and establishes the simulation model.
