With the further development of economic society, the demand for electric power is also increasing. Sustainable development of the power industry has been put on the agenda in various countries all over the world. Economy, safety and environmental protection have become the three main factors for the electric power industry. To meet the rising demands of power supply, power system should develop in a more econom-ical, secure and environmental pattern in the future. Therefore, Smart grid emerges as required. Smart grids which combine information technology have three characteristic-s:high efficiency, reliability, compatibility, openness and interactivity. The mode has changed to interactive, flexible and efficient pattern from power generation and supply of the existing power grids which merely transmit electric power to users.It is important to develop the Digital terminal for intelligent power distribution with the form of user side management in the construction of the smart grid. Specifi-cally, owing to the smart meters installed in the client, the power usage information is upload via the Internet to the data center at regular intervals, which makes the infor-mation among the links of power distribution, transmission and production interactive and sharing.The digital terminal for intelligent power distribution collects data from smart meters periodically, and processes these data. It will save history data, curve data and so on locally; It will upload real time data; It also decides the occurrence of events. In theory, one terminal can link2040smart meters at most. It means that there will be large amounts of data to process. How to process these data is the emphasis of the thesis. Another emphasis is how to insure the safety of data. It needs to set up a reliable communication mechanism. This thesis introduces the background of the topic, the purpose and the content and the goal of the research firstly. And then the system’s hardware design and soft-ware design are introduced in general. The system’s hardware design includes the selection of main hardware, and the design and function of three modules. The sys-tem’s software design includes the function of five modules. Then the thesis expounds encryption/decipher module based on ESAM(Embedded Secure Access Module), the module that includes protocol analysis and data processing. At last, the thesis con-cludes the achievements and shortage of the terminal and prospects the development.The terminal can adapt to the average user’s demand basically. It can also process large amounts of data and respond requests as soon as possible. It has wide application prospects.
