The development of the city, without exception, is always accompanied by theemergence of new buildings and spatial forms. The high-rise buildings have beendeveloping rapidly in contemporary cities as the response of usage requirements, thesymbol of city image, or even the economic strength of a city. In terms of city center, which has the most various and intensive elements in the city, high-rise buildings, asa new way to express modern city image and characteristics, has become the samechoice of the spatial form of the city centers domestically and internationally. Under thispremise, some problems worth rethinking: What the differences in terms of the layout ofhigh-rise buildings in the city centers in different city? Why the form and the feelingsare different? Therefore, not only the spatial model of high-rise buildings in the city, butalso the city culture reflected from the model, are both worth deeper recognizing.Based on these backgrounds, this paper focuses on the high-rise layout in citycenters. First, two basic questions have been put forward: How have these high-risebuildings been layout, in the physical spatial level? What are the reasons for the form ofthe layout of high-rise, in the dynamic mechanism level? These two questions is notonly consist of the topic of this paper, but also consist of the logic frame, whichconform the cognitive rules, from the shallow to the deep, from the exterior to theinside, from the physical spatial to the dynamic mechanism. To solve the first question, descriptive research analysis of the material impact elements and characteristicselements on the layout of the central area is introduced, by drawing on the methodsfrom Urban Morphology. To answer the second question, the dynamic mechanism of thelayout of the high-rise has been analyzed, including the driving force consist of differentkinds of force and the mechanism of action. By doing empirical research, these twoparts can be combined and to be integrated in the city. Learning from the city could helpus to see the interaction between the physical space and the dynamic mechanism. Thispaper will try to expand the research which seems like just a topic on physical space tothe policy of city development. In order to prove the layout of high-rise, not only needurban planning and construction are needed, but also the support of the policy, economy, culture and society, etc. are necessary.Hence, the main content of this thesis can be divided into four parts:Part One: Theoretical Studies. This part will first confine the study scope on the city center, and then clarify the level of the research, and introduce the basic theory andpractice on the layout of high-rise and the dynamic mechanism.Part Two: Methodology Framework. On the basis of Urban Morphology, this partwill point out that the high-rise layout in the city center area, can be divided into fivelevels: level of overall distribution, level of natural geographic, level of blocks plot, level of interface outline as well as level of other city spatial elements from theperspective of physical space. Also, each level can be subdivided into a variety ofelements. Then for the five levels and sub-elements, the paper will analyze the generalcharacteristics of the high-rise.Part Three: Empirical Research. This part is the core part of this thesis. This partwill analyze five urban centers of four typical cities in the worldwide, includingManhattan in New York, Lujiazui in Shanghai, Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong,Jiefangbei and Xingxilie in Chongqing. According to the methodology frameworkstudies of influences and features level and factor of empirical analysis, this part willillustrate the differences between these city centers, and sum up the characteristics ofthe layout of different cities through comparing.Part Four: Mechanism Analysis. This part is based on empirical analysis of thephysical space, but goes much deeper. And it will analyze the driving force behind themechanism of high-rise building layout. First, driving force in the dynamic mechanism, including the four main driving force of the policy, economic, society, technical abilitywill be considered respectively, to explore the impact of each driving force for high-risebuildings unilaterally. Secondly, the combination of the four cities selected samples, thispart will point out the differences between urban high-rise building layout from themain cause of force, summarized the mechanism of power generated by the system indifferent contexts.
