The Contemporary Urban Cemetery Landscape Design In Xi’an Region-taking The Landscape Design Of The Newly Reconstructed Xi’an Funeral Parlor And Its Subordinate Cemetery For An Example

With the social development and increasing change of people’s awareness, theurban mesentery construction has drawn more and more attention in recent years, andthe corresponding landscape design has also become the focus. Due to the influenceof the traditional funeral and interment concepts, Chinese people have, for a long term,held an evasive attitude towards the urban cemetery. Accordingly, the urban cemeterylandscape space creation has been ignored in China, and the development is alsobackward. As a result, the urban cemetery landscape design has substantial defects inboth theoretical study and practice.Although，the urban cemetery has a short presence in China,but it is animportant part in people’s social life. The urban cemetery is a major place for buryingand recalling the departed. With a long history and profound cultural connotation, thecemetery has reflected people’s outlook on life, world, and values. Therefore, it hasbecome an important subject for all of us on how to create the urban cemeterylandscape space that can match with the features of Xi’an and reflect the historicaland cultural characteristics of the locality. It is also the main purpose of this paper.This paper starts with Chinese traditional culture to present the influence of thephilosophical thinking of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism on the funeral andinterment culture, and mainly studies the funeral and interment culture and customs ofXi’an region based on the unification of the three religions. On the premise of thecultural study, we have compared the similarity and difference between urbancemeteries of China and those of the west, and established the design principles fitting China’s urban cemetery landscape space creation. In addition, this paper has alsocombined actual project design cases to make in-depth exploration into gardeningphilosophy, gardening methods, spatial layout, vertical design, and plant growing, etc.,and also put forward some opinions and suggestions on the urban cemetery landscapeconstruction and management of Xi’an region.Finally, this paper suggests that the urban cemetery landscape creation of Xi’anregion should be based on local traditional culture, to not only inherit the excellenthistorical accumulation, but also reflect the cultural characteristics of the times. Byfollowing this principle, it is recommended to try to build the urban cemetery of Xi’anregion into an open, ecological, park-style landscape space that is full of humanisticcare and artistic atmosphere.
