Of Urban Ecological Garden Cemetery

Ecological landscaping, as the main trend of modern city landscape construction, takes it as a guideline to beautify the city environment, keep its ecological balance. It aims at putting the city space resources into full play and setting up a stable artificial community in which various species coexist harmoniously and orderly. The quality of ecological landscape of a city cemetery is decisive to the integrity of the whole landscape of a city and a city's ecological environment quality. We should respect our tradition, and carry on our cultural heritage, while designing a city cemetery. At the same time, the design must make innovations and progresses, must reflect the feature of times. For one thing, to meet its ecological requirement the design should maintain the ecological balance or leave it undisturbed, agrees with the existing natural landscape and natural order. For another, as a special place to convey emotions, the landscape must convey humanity and local flavor. Funeral culture, as an essential part of national culture, records social development of mankind by its special carrier, and reflects from multiple angles basic pictures in politics, economy, culture, military events and technology of certain society. This paper studies China's city cemetery from its historical development and the present condition. It discusses the following 3 issues: first, evaluation and forms of present ecological cemetery building in city landscape; second, influence by Fengshui on traditional funeral culture; third, a study on ecological forestation model in building city cemetery and a summary of planning methods for city ecological cemetery.
