Urban Renewal Strategies & Design Control In The Context Of "Compact City"

"Urban renewal" and "compact city" are two high-frequency words in the field of contemporary Chinese urban planning, which direct to the rigorous inner city and the old "cake sharing style" expansion mode under the rapid urbanization in China. In this paper, as the project in SanYa is the basis, author investigate the applicability of the“compact city”and its derived planning strategies, in order to innovate the Chinese Urban Renewal planning concepts and guide the Urban Renewal Planning Practice.Paper is based on researching the foreign "compact city" theory and analysis of special issues in Chinese inner-city, and make the "compact" planning strategies at the meso level in the field of Urban Renewal planning and management. Paper is divided into six chapters, The first chapter describes the main research background and related theoretical developments, concepts and research framework. Second and third chapter are the basic research for the topic: first, paper studies the highly controversial "compact city" concept, generated from the theoretical background, the relevant cases and introduction to the parties to the dispute proceeding, analysis the meaning in-depth of "compact city" theory. Then, the special problem in Chinese inner-city are considered. Chapter IV and Chapter V is a key part of this article, focused on the application of "compact city" concept in Chinese inner-city. The final chapter submit conclusions to explain the lack of research and look to the future of the "compact city" theory in China.
