| The global era is the era of competition, whose featurelies in not the competitionbetween nations, but the fact that all the countries and regions form different regionalalliances in light of their historical traditions, geographical locations and interests toparticipate in the global competition as competitive units. In the City Era, the city is atthe core of the region, while regional competition is essentially the competitionamongcities, not the competition among single cities, butthatamong Urban Regions consistingof central cities and the surrounding citiesand towns and regions. The Urban Region isthe basic space unit of regional competition in the global era. In an increasinglynetworked region, the interaction between the city and the region is becomingincreasinglyintense, and the production networks and city networks formed by factorsof production, flow of goods, and industrial transfer are becoming increasingly mature. Thus, it is both urgent and necessary to study the development of urban space from theperspective of interaction between the city and the region. No matter scholars on urban planning or scholars on regional economy andeconomic geography, they havealways been fully aware of the close relationshipbetween the city and the region. However, due to the long-term existence of thedisciplinary boundaries and the deficiency of the traditional methodology of urbanplanning disciplines, researcheson the relationship between the city and the region stillremain in the stage of abstract summarizing and generalizingcharacterized by theintuitive understanding. That is to say,as for the researches onthe city and the region, fragmentation is much larger than the fusion. This fragmented theory exposes a fatalflaw when used to analyze the major strategic issues of urbanspatial development. Thisthesis attempts to theoretically explore the content and mechanism of the relationbetween urban space and regional space, regional motivation for urbanspatialdevelopment, so as to provide theoreticalsupport and strategic recommendations inregional research and analysis for urban spatial planning. With regard to the urban spatial development of Wanzhou District, ChongingMunicipality, optimizing the spatial structure of the City-Region system is an effectiveapproach toaddress the urban and rural issuein northeast part of Chongqing, improve thecomprehensive competitiveness of the city and the region and promote regionaleconomic growth. This thesis carries out a systematic analysis of the City-Region theory, themotivation for urbanspatial development and planning strategiesfrom the following fiveparts. The first part describes the basic theory for the study of the spatial structure of theUrban Region, analyzesthe common property between the urban and regional economicspace, and puts forward the idea that the city and the region have a certain degreeofhomogeneity, their operation mechanismshave some similarities and their spatialstructuresare in harmony. Basedon this, the thesis defines the connotation andcomposition of the City-Region system, and analyzesthe features of its operatingsystem. The second part analyzes the micro-and macro-mechanisms of the urban region.Starting from the factorsand endowments of the economic space, this part proposes thecore ideathat the location asthe economic space field is not onlythe location of the space, but the organic combination of various economic elements. In this part, a completetheory, from the location selectionof microscopic subjects to the agglomerationeconomy then to the economic functional area and urban–region, is constructed, theconnotation and law of the urban-regional economic development are analyzed, and thecirculation law of the urban-regional economic development is proposed. The third part analyzes the theory of power accumulation of urban developmentfrom the perspective of the City-Region system, and on this basis, puts forth the ideathat the region is the power source for urban development. The fourth part, based on the understanding of the City-Region system and theimpetusfor urban development, starting from the overall situation of the city and theregion, proposes five strategies of structure planning of the urban space. The fifth part, combining with the theory, carries out the empirical research ofWanzhou urban spatial structureand brings up corresponding planning strategies. |
