Research On Place-making In The Small Square Designing In Towns

With rapid development for urbanization in China, featured construction for townsis of a hot issue, while small squares could be the one of mostly reflect public spacecharacteristics for towns as it has been depicted as detailed physical image. By takingstudies on small square venue construction and the innovation construction fortraditional town square in China, this Paper made studies on venue construction forsmall square design of towns, raised the design theories and approaches for constructingsmall squares for towns via interdisciplinary studies, field researches and case analysis.For this Paper, the development for town square in China had been firstly taken asthe study background with the small square as the object of study, the difference hadbeen illustrated between Chinese traditional small town square and urban square.Secondly, on the basis of analyzing the current status for small town square, readingshad been undertaken for the venues of small town squares on such aspects as lifestyle,culture, placeness, ecological and artistic features with relevant theories been applied.Thirdly, combing the project practices taken place for6small town squares located inChang’an District in northern China, the discussion was made for the venues for thesesquares; and finally the results summarized reveal that general stream, passengerdistribution and the demonstration on rural atmosphere are labeled as the key points forconstructing a small town square.By figuring out all the features for forming small town squares, this Paper proposesthat passenger distribution and rural atmosphere that need to be paid with attention forconstructing a small square. Small town squares constructed resorting to theseapproaches could be taken as pilot projects for instructing the innovation for traditional small town square in China.
