With rapid urban processes and large-scale urban reconstruction, urban spaces is changing at a rapid rate.In the process, lots of leftover spaces appeared. They are distributed in the corner of the block,or isolated from the surrounding space,or the boundaries are vaguely defined and urgently needed to be transformed. The article intervenes from the perspective of “places” and discusses the transformation of the leftover spaces in the urban district.Re-examine the urbanity and humanity in the public space from the changing cities and the unchanging places, that is,the concept of publicity.Combining the open form and local logic features of the leftover spaces, then puts forward the corresponding view of the places—the view of places of realism.Divide site regeneration into place-design and place-manage,and focus on the former.Discuss the theory of the three step of place-design: place-context,placestructure,place-making,and the transformation principle is summarized: 1 Considering the residual characteristics of the site—seeking the local logic of the block;2 Resetting the areas and grey-spaces—creating a pleasant sense of enclose and scale;3 Formalizing the structure—looking for meaning behind the structure;4 Setting up the necessary activities—establishing the attraction of place to people;5 Setting up a place that can be participated and opened—to achieve self-realization of people on the site;6 Making the place accessible, green and safe—the basis for the use of the site. Finally, this paper analyzes 14 cases and verifies the above principles, summarizing the design trends including ecological restoration, alien squares, temporary buildings, community business and informal exploit.
