For a long time, the study of the physical properties of ancient pottery, mainly concentrated in the porosity, water absorption, density, hardness, firing temperature etc. Generally, lower porosity and water absorption rate, higher density、strength and firing temperature, mean higher quality of pottery and ceramic technology. But we think that the relationships between porosity, water absorption, density, hardness, firing temperature and the quality of pottery and ceramic technology are not as I mentioned above.To summarize the current ceramic technology research, we found that the lack of basic research is due tol current situation. Therefore, the emphasis of this paper is to discuss the basic theory on study of pottery technology. We introduced true density in pottery physical attributes to construct a new combining research method with porosity, true density and density. These pottery attributes changed during different operation process. Through the simulation test, we got the variations of pottery three physical properties. The analysis of the experimental results tell us, true density changes regularly, is not affected by the process of making pottery, and can be used as a parameter in the study of pottery. Through the analysis of the related performance factors of pottery matrix permeability, we found that porosity cannot directly reflect the water seepage performance of pottery. The porosity is limited to us as the main parameter of pottery study.The quality of pottery has closely relation with typ and usion factors, such as durability, comfort. We will try to determine the relationship between pottery physical attributes and quality, and compar the differences to judge the quality and ceramic technology of pottery.We used true density and porosity to study the Nanwa Ruins Culture pottery materials, revised some conclusions.
