There is a very classic pre-Qin book named Yugong in our country, which is rich of the knowledge of Toponymy. Also, many place names are involved in this work. But it is too short to talk slightly on these place names. Among these place names, lots of them are the same one name but different places, or the different names but the same one place. In this paper, only focus on these river names in Yugong. On the one hand, because the river is generally regarded as the geographical landmarks, which means these river play an important role in Yugong; On the other hand, river names account for two-thirds of the place names in Yugong. So making sure these river names precisely has a lot to correctly understand the classic work.Based on the predecessors’research results, these river names are divided into. two categories, according to whether there is any discrepancy. These undisputed river names are analyzed gradually by state. I laid special stress on analyzing these controversial river names in Yugong. These controversial river names are divided fiveCategories, by the same water with different names,actual or imagined, real or virtual refers to, incorrectly comprehend relay an erroneous explanation, looking for the nowadays water by the ancient water names.Through systematically researching on river names in Yugong, I found some geographically naming rules:one is that early place names are mostly named by natural; two is that these general name which named by natural are omitted in using.In addition, I found that there is a connection between the river names in Yugong and the place names in nowadays. That is to say, the river names in Yugong have effect on the naming in nowadays. In proving river follows, these place names can also check the ancient river follows.Finally, I summed up the five main reasons to different explanation for one river name in Yugong. One is that a long river has many different names, which usually cause the disambiguation saying; then, it is unknown in literature, and nowhere to be found in actual geographic, whether actually or imagined, the ancient river follows often derived a lot of argument; As "Sanjiang""Jiuhe" and "Jiujiang", these names are made up by numbers, what the number refers to usually tend to have a variety of different interpretation; Some of these river names in Yugong have many different names in different literatures. These names are hard to avoid omissions and errors after coping again and again, so a variety of claims come out again; Some ancient river gradually flooded due to the Yellow River channel changing, without any vestige. It is difficult to reach consensus on trajectory flow problem by lacking of literature. Ambiguities can not be avoided, with deepening into the research and disambiguation will emerge in endlessly. It brings some trouble, but at the same time, it inspires us to look for more evidence, looking for right answers. Ambiguities force us to go forward.
