China and Japan are both located at the circle of East Asian Civilization. These two countries experienced similar historical background and cultural tradition in the first part of modern times, but in the following course of history, they developed in totally different ways. Japan, as the only Asian country that has achieved modernization in modern times and one of the countries in the world with the fastest modernization, is undoubtedly the most worthy to be studied among all the examples of modernization. Because of these, this article is centered on the progress of the modern Japan’s science and culture, and emphasizes the progress of the introduction to the western natural science in the modern Japan. I hope this article can summarize some useful experience and lessons for our country’s modernization.As is known to all, the specially appointed culture tradition is necessary to the development of the natural science. The Europe’s renaissance has awaken the rationality of man and laid the foundation for the development of the natural science. The spirit of reason, democracies and liberty is the basis of the natural science, in the meanwhile, it’s the internally matters of the natural science. On the other hand, the great development and achievement of the natural science has promoted the transmission of the spirit. Hence one can see that the natural science and the spirit actually complement each other.China and Japan, as the backward country in the modern times, demand the import of the natural science. However, the progress of the import is not so easy. Therefore, the article is centered on the scientific factors of the modernization progress in Japan, this thesis discusses the roles Western natural science played during the modernization of Japan and the effects it have on the development of Japan from different angles as many as possible, aims at the overall understanding of the culture of science formed and developed in modern Japan, and summarizes some experiences that is worth learning for China, which is beneficial to the healthy development and successful modernizing of China.The introduction presents the history of science development in modern Japan. By this, we can get the subject matter of this article. Then I introduce the three major issues successively, which are the enlightenment, the ideological content of Fukuzawa Yukichi, the scientific education and scientific research system in modern Japan. On this basis, I got the conclusion of this article, and hope that I can provide some reference to the modernization of China.
