Presently, evaluation approaches for are classified into two categories, i.e. index system and individual evaluation categories. However, these two evaluation approaches for sustainable development have disadvantages of difficult to apply in regional sustainable development assessment because of too large number of indicators and only reflecting one aspect of sustainable development respectively. Therefore, it is very crucial to design a integrated evaluation model which can reflect overall status of sustainable development and has characteristics of high operationality and credibility. This study is to assess the capacity of Qinhuangdao sustainable development and obtain quantitative data for Qinhuangdao sustainable development capacity, and do comparative analysis to obtain the integrated evaluation results of Qinhuangdao sustainable development capacity by interestedly applying evaluation approaches and models for sustainable development based on collected basic data from four point views of sociology, economics, ecology and ethics. The results showed:(1) From point view of sociology, it can be seen that human development index was low from the calculation of human development index of Qinhuangdao which caused very low score of sustainable development. Social development capacity index was overall low. The reason for that was mainly due to inadequate investment in research and development, weak capacity of regional economic regulation and control which showed that the potential sustainability of Qinhuangdao was inadequate.(2) From point view of economics, the proportion of human capital in Qinhuangdao was low by using real savings rate assessment which had restraining effect on sustainable development of Qinhuangdao. The main problems were environmental pollution, the accuracy of ecological damage loss calculation and available of evaluation criteria and other relevant data. However, for the process of approach, it had already reached the goal of sustainable development evaluation.(3) From point view of ecology, it was clearly showed that the extent of a regional resource consumption and waste elimination from the calculation of ecological occupation, ecological carrying capacity and ecological surplus. In the other hand, the evaluation of sustainable development as a indicator of ecological occupation demonstrated that the relation between ecological occupation and sustainable development. From the evaluation of Qinhuangdao, it can be observed that ecological deficit of Qinhuangdao was large which indicated the ecological potential of sustainable development was very weak.(4) From point view of ethics, the calculation of harmony, fair and coordination of ethics may not be reasonable, however, as an important part of integrated evaluation of sustainable development, it ensured that integrity of sustainable development evaluation. The assessment of Qinhuangdao showed that evaluation value of ethics was high because of high value of environmental awareness survey which was consistent with Qinhuangdao as a coastal city.In the seven approaches of evaluation from four point views of sociology, economics, ecology and ethics, the evaluation score from ethics was the highest one and sustainable development status was evaluated to be weak; the first lowest score was ecological occupation and the second lowest was human development index assessment in which the status of sustainable development was evaluated to be strong unsustainable development; In the rest of four approaches, the three of them evaluated to be unsustainable development and only one of them was weak unsustainable development. Different results of the different evaluation approaches didn't show which one was good or bad, just demonstrated different emphasis for each evaluation approach.
