The goal of this paper is to design and optimize the system of video front end based on DM642. This paper is based on a practical project. Focusing on each stage of development, H.264 codec, DM642 hardware platform, CCS integrated development environment, and optimization of codec module, this paper has done a lot of thorough researches.At first, this paper introduces the components, applications and trend of video surveillance system. Secondly, the requirements of video front end are enumerated and a system design is also given. Thirdly, this paper briefly reviews the development of modern video coding standards. An introduction to the main body of the H.264 standard with emphasis on key techniques in video coding layer was given. And then the paper gives an introduction of the structure and features of TMS320DM642 chip.This paper gives the implementation of system design in detail, including initialization, video capturing, audio capturing, OSD controlling and H.264 video codec. And then this paper discusses the methods of optimization of H.264 video codec based on DM642. There are four methods discussed in this paper including data type changing, using intrinsics, optimization of data copy and moving data with EDMA.In this paper, not only a solution of video front end based on DM642 is successfully put forward and implemented, but also the methods are commonly helpful to other video codec based devices, in which lies the meaning of our work.
