With the development of electronics, computer, and signal processing technology, video surveillance is one of the promising applications. It is widely used due to its excellent properties such as intuition and convenience. At present, the video surveillance has become all-digital network in which video coding is one of the core technologies.H.264 has obvious superiority in terms of coding efficiency and channel adaptive capacity, compared to those existing video compression standards. It provides a good video compression codec to video surveillance. Due to high computational complexity, the implement of real-time H.264 codec on embedded platform is a hot issue. TMS320DM642 is an ideal platform for multimedia. Based on the extensive study of open source code X264, this thesis transplants and optimizes it from PC version to DM642 platform. Finally a whole video surveillance system is constructed. The system realizes video capture and H.264 codec on the DM642. The compressed bit streams is transmitted to a computer which real-time display images by decoding the bit streams. Usually video surveillance can't be realized in low-bandwidth, resource-constrained wireless sensor networks by H.264. According to the fact that video background is basically unchanged, we propose a new compression algorithm based on motion detection. It is processed on the DM642 in real-time. Test results show that the new algorithm can significantly increase the compression ratio and improve picture quality compared to original H.264. Therefore it can be applied to wireless sensor networks.
