A website homepage is a multimodal genre that is based on computer and networktechnology. It is necessary for the viewers to own multiliterary abilities to decode thespreading ways of information fully. The present thesis has collected30sports websitehomepages as its corpus by using the software called SNAGIT. It can be further dividedinto two sub corpus, that is the163.com and the ESPN.com, which respectively includes15texts,135pages in all.The present thesis analyzes the multimodal characteristics of sports websitehomepages by applying both static and dynamic methods. In the first stage, the MCA(multimodal content analysis)(Jones,2008) will be used as main analyzing tools, whichmainly analyzes the distribution features of visual contents, the visual types, visualspace and size, and visual text blocks. In the second stage, based on the transcriptiontheory by Baldry and Thibault (2006), the thesis makes cluster analysis and activitysequence analysis, using cluster as the analyzing tool, in order to explore themultimodal meaning making system, which supplies a new sight angle for webpage textanalysis.Through the analysis, the thesis draws the following conclusions. First, the presentthesis supports Kress and van Leeuwen's view that the information value of verbalcontent is related to the position in the text. Second, for an average text of sportswebsite homepage, the metafunctional distribution of visuals on every page ranks fromtextual to experiential and interpersonal. The latter two are nearly the same. In the twosub corpus, ESPN relatively attach more emphasis on experiential function while163pays more attention to interpersonal function. Third, the average distribution of textblocks in sports website homepage is uneven in that the experiential and textualfunctions are obviously heavier than the interpersonal function while163is just theother way around. Fourth, through the transcription of sports website homepages, it isfound that the website texts are more flexible, compared with other texts, because therole of the viewer is no longer a passive receiver, but an active constructor of texts.
