Multi-modal Analysis Of The Mainstream Media's Crisis Discourse

At the end of 2019,the pneumonia epidemic caused by "novel coronavirus" suddenly spread from Wuhan,Hubei Province,and quickly spread to all parts of the country.In the face of sudden public crisis incidents,many mainstream media in China adopted the short video report form of "Vlog+News",covering the epidemic from a diversified and comprehensive perspective of personal narrative.Among them,CCTV News and Bilibili's well-known food bloggers " Food Poor Dao" cooperation,hand in hand to the " Wuhan Vlog" series of short video reports received widespread attention.As an innovative production and transmission of crisis discourse delivered by mainstream media in a special social context,"Wuhan Vlog" recorded the real scenes of Wuhan people's fight against the epidemic,and effectively played a role of stabilizing people's hearts,gathering strength and guiding public opinion.As a multi-modal discourse,the internal symbol system of "Wuhan Vlog" is mainly composed of two major modalities:language and vision.Based on the theory of linguistics,this paper uses Halliday's functional grammar and Kress&van Leeuwen's visual grammar as the theoretical basis,and conducts a multimodal discourse analysis on 30 episodes of Vlog to explore the functional characteristics of each modal system and the ways and paths that they jointly participate in the construction of crisis discourse.The paper uses multimodal discourse analysis as the research method,introduces a functional grammar framework into the study of language modalities,and finds that the news corpus of "Wuhan Vlog" depicts the current situation of the epidemic,focuses on anti-epidemic measures,shows the strength of the fight against the epidemic,and deepens the fight against the epidemic identification is of great significance.Secondly,the live simultaneous voice uses vivid and objective language and a firm and positive attitude to render and guide the viewer's emotions,and establish interpersonal connections with the viewer.In addition,in discourse cohesion,internal fingering and connection methods are used to draw the two sides of the discourse closer,and communicative distance drives the expression of the meaning of words.In terms of visual modalities,I studied the theoretical framework based on visual grammar and found that the visual images in "Wuhan Vlog" reflect the characteristics and functions of the image in presenting the anti-epidemic subject,displaying the reporting position,highlighting the anti-epidemic spirit,and highlighting the results of the anti-epidemic.The thesis then explores the collaboration of the two major modalities in "Wuhan Vlog",and the three ways to jointly participate in the construction of crisis discourse is mainly reflected in the knowledge construction of recording of the truth of the event,popular science and epidemic prevention knowledge,the identity construction of shaping of the reporter's personality,focus on individual narratives,and the media presentation of various channel interaction,the realization of the media of differential communication,and it excavates the value orientation and construction effect behind the crisis discourse of "Wuhan Vlog" from the two dimensions of fact and value.Finally,based on the multi-modal analysis of "Wuhan Vlog" the paper puts forward suggestions for improvement on the mainstream media's crisis discourse strategy and short video reports from the three perspectives of timely and comprehensive reports,strengthens crisis awareness;reflects humanistic care,establishes mutual trust and content matrix integration,and correctly guides public opinion.
