For wireless sensor network (WSN), the sensor nodes have very restricted energy, the idea of topology control and energy-saving technologies are two main key points for energy-saving and network lifetime prolonging.Firstly, this paper analyzes and compares the typical existing routing protocols. Moreover, the cluster routing protocol such as LEACH as the representative is analyzed.Secondly, for large networks, this paper proposes an efficient routing protocol based on topology control and clustering—RPTCC. The idea of RPTCC is to divide the network into two layers logically, the communication between sensor nodes toward cluster heads and the communication between cluster heads toward the base station are relatively independent, and optimized respectively. In the network construction phase, first we do an optimal design of the location of base stations so that the distance between cluster head and its nearest base station can be shortened. Second we develop a routing technology which can arrange the communication between cluster heads toward the base stations reasonably. In the cluster construction stage, a new cluster head selection mechanism based on an optimal cluster number and energy-adaptive threshold is designed, and the TDMA mechanism is used as the channel accessing method. In the stage of steady work, the information is collected directly after the clustering of the underlying network, and then the upper network using the mechanism of topology control will send aggregated data to the base station. Through the optimization of the two-tiered network, the target of balancing energy consumption and maximizing network lifetime is basicly achieved. Finally, we simulate RPTCC routing protocol on NS2 platform. According to the results of the simulation, an analysis and comparion of the DIRECT,LEACH and RPTCC protocols is performed respectively. The simulation results show that the protocol compared to other protocols can reduce the overall network energy consumption more effectively, guarantee the data reception of the base stations and maximize the network lifetime.
