With the development of network convergence and mobile Internet, users generally can use more than one communication terminal simultaneously or alternately. How to achieve the seamless handover of applications especially the real-time multimedia application between those terminals has become one of the hottest research issues of technology. In this thesis, we at first analyze various kinds of mobility managements for real-time multimedia services. Secondly, the author describes in detail the stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) and its extendsion dynamic address reconfiguration (DAR). Then, a real-time transmission prototype system which uses SCTP as the transport layer protocol is designed and developed over Linux system. Based on the prototype, the author verifies the feasibility of handover for SCTP association for multi-terminal. Combining the restart of SCTP association and SCTP DAR, a method is proposed for seamless handover of real-time multimedia application. The typical application scenarios, protocol design and control process are also discussed. The method requires the server making no changes, and involves only clients in handover. Through modifying the client-side's control procedure, we realize seamlessly handover for the real-time multimedia service switchable from one terminal to another. The result of experiments shows that our method can perform the real-time multimedia service migration between two terminals within 1 second, which has relative lower handover latency. The control flow can be used for real-time multimedia application.
