Experiment is an integral part of modern education system. It plays an active and important role in helping students to consolidate the theoretical knowledge and improve the practical ability. In recent years, as the social development and education reform, the deficiencies which from traditional laboratory has become more apparent in the teaching scale, equipment upgrades, capital investment, etc. Especially in the field of distance education, there is an objective constraint in time and space. With the rapid development of computer and virtual reality technology, virtual laboratory which based on online teaching is becoming an effective way to solve these problems. It is through the virtual simulation of experimental scene, equipment and operation, to break through the constraints of pace-times and laboratory resource, allow students to complete the experiment content by network browser as real experimental environment.This paper applies the Internet and virtual reality technology, takes college teaching demand as the design basis, constructs online 3D virtual laboratory system for computer network. First of all, the development status quo of virtual laboratory and implementation techniques at home and abroad are deeply analyzed, some kinds of mainstream virtual technologies are summarized and compared. On this basis, the system design which adopt Virtools technology with JSP,3ds Max and Oracle databases is proposed. In this paper, the real computer network laboratory and experimental equipments are used as the simulation objects. The virtual laboratory architecture, organization model and functional design are introduced. In addition, DAO and MVC design patterns are adopted to achieve the application administration part of the whole system, includes user administration, information diffusion and data acquisition of virtual experiments. Furthermore, with virtual roaming and RIP protocol analysis as examples, the virtual experimental features which contain 3D interactive and dynamic data processing are also achieved.In example of 3D virtual roaming, the virtual laboratory is simulated completely and subtly, it provides roaming experience to subscribers from different perspectives, such as the introduction of laboratory, autonomic roaming and immersion roaming. In example of RIP protocol analysis, the function simulation for H3C network equipments is performed; the common virtual configurations for switch and router are achieved; the flashing situation of network interfaces is also presented by combining with multi-windows. Moreover, automatic scoring mechanism can judge the steps of subscribers conveniently and effectively. After finishing all steps of virtual experiments, there are two data storage methods for user record so that subscribers can review and summarize key points of the experiment. Finally, some safety measures, such as preventing unauthorized login are designed which can protect safety of system.At present, this virtual laboratory has been put into practice, and some experiments can be applied normally. In last chapter, the development work is summarized, while a prospect of this paper is given.
