The Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) as an important component of the Computer Assisted Instruction has a bright development future, and has already obtained more and more attention from educator. Using VRL in education can break through the space-time restriction of traditional experiment, reduce the experimental outlay, and evade the dangerous operation in traditional experiment. Most present VRL systems adopt the planar design mode, which differ greatly from the true Laboratory in such aspects as sense of reality and interaction, and can not meet the demand of practical teaching. On the other hand, establishing VR systems needs costly hardware device and a large amount of capital, restrict the application of VR technology in education field.With the development of computer application technology, especial the large improvement of computer graphic processing capability, the desktop VR system which before only can run on high-powered computer now can run normally on a ordinary personal computer. The popularization of Virtual Reality technology reaches an unprecedented extent, and brings a new life for the development of the virtual Laboratory. The VRL based on Desktop VR use X3D technology to produce realistic three-dimensional virtual scene, and can enable experimenter to sense and operate various kinds of virtual object, to interact with the scene real-timely and mutually.
