Wireless sensor network (WSN) takes on widespread application foreground and becomes a new research area of modern corresponds technology. Both academia and industries are very interested in it. The numbers of sensor node in WSN are numerous and single node is extraordinarily limited in resource. How effectively using sensor energy to maximize networks lifetime is the most important challenge which sensor networks faces.Based on the demands of different application, several classical data transmission protocols are compared and analyzed in their design characteristic. According to the concrete application, the problems in the distribution of cluster leader and data transmission are addressed, and an energy-efficient data transmission protocol (EEDT) is proposed.EEDT divides the whole network into several clusters dynamically, reduces the energy loss with the help of the multi-hop transmission, and extends the life span of WSN. According to the principle that the relation of cluster leaders is hexagon, proper nodes are chosen as cluster leaders from the center of sensor network to the edge. So the problem of unreasonable distribution in LEACH is addressed. Data transmission in cluster leader processes from the edge to the center, with the aid of the data fusion and DSSS technology, solves the problem that cluster leaders near the base station drain out the energy firstly, reduces time delay. Based on OPNET platform, the performance of EEDT is compared to other protocols. The simulation results show that EEDT guarantees the reasonable partition of clusters, reduces the time delay, and prolongs the operation period of WSN.
