Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is a kind of radio access network with the characteristics of high bandwidth and self-organization. It takes the advantages of credible transmitting, scalability, wide coverage and etc. With the development of wireless communication network and the emergence of various network applications, WMN faces challenges on how to provide high quality services of wireless network for accessing to Internet for people. In view of WMN performance analysis they consist of network capacity, retransmission times, coverage and etc. As an important indicator of WMN performance, network capacity is a basis issue for the WMN. Thus, the improvements of network performance can be achieved by the optimization and control of network capacity which has important meaning.The WMN capacity is affectted by lots of factors in the WMN, for example network topology, channel assignment, round trip time, gateway node and etc. The optimization and control of WMN capacity is studied by the adjustment sending rate based on the gateway node and round trip time.Firstly, the structure and characteristics of the WMN are studied on the foundation of analysing and studying the research methods of the client mesh network capacity and the WMN capacity. Then the merits and disadvantages of the WMN are given. Secondly, the research technique of the rate-adaptive control mechanism, round trip time and the influence factors of the sending rate are analysised and studied. It gives the relation between buffer area of the sink node and the forwarding rate and how to calculate the round trip time. Finally, the rate-adaptive control mechanism based on buffer area of the gateway node and round trip time is studied on the foundation of analysing the channel assignment problem. In order to optimize and control the WMN capacity, the source node rate-adaptive control mechanism is designed. The results of the simulation example show that it is feasible and effective.
