As wireless sensor networks have the features of monitor, perception and collecting data, they are widely used in different domains such as military, medical treatment and traffic control. Most of sensors are deployed in severe environment even the adversary region which makes them vulnerable to be physically attacked. So it is very important to reduce the energy consumption of sensor nodes and ensure the safe of wireless sensor networks.Due to the limited resources of sensor nodes in memory space, processing capability and energy, key management must be less energy consumption and take up less memory space. To deal with these problems, a cluster-based dynamic key management scheme was proposed in this paper. The key operations are as simple as bitwise OR and XOR. These OR and XOR operations not only save energy of sensors but also with high efficiency. Keys between sensors are not transmitted directly, which reduces the probability of key revealing. The keys between sensors are updated at regular intervals, or when some of sensors are captured, the base station will inform sensors to update keys. These can strengthen the security of the wireless sensor networks. Finally, the simulation is based on LEACH-C routing protocol which uses a central control algorithm (performed by the base station) to form clusters. The simulation results of energy consumption and network security in NS-2 proved that the scheme has high security and low energy cost compared with other schemes.
