With the development of modern power system trend to EHV and UHV, The large capacity, long distance transmission has become inevitable choice. Being the frequent fault area, transmission lines which have long distances always cross mountains are hard to find the fault location. A method of quickly and accurately locating transmission line faults has been a much-desired tool for control center operators and the repair crews. Compared with conventional fault location based on fundamental components, traveling-wave based fault location is more accurate and not apt to be affected by transition resistor, fault type, distributed capacitance, bus configuration and CT saturation, etc.Above all,working principles of transmission line fault location techniques based on fault generated voltage and current traveling waves are introduced by the thesis. The influence factors of fault location are described. And then discusses the basic theory of the traveling wave, and introduces the method of the traveling wave ranging basic principle and characteristics. The respective point and disadvantages are obtained based on comparative analysis of single ended and double ended. The characteristics and system structure of WFL2010 also are introduced. Through the above traveling wave ranging mechanism and system analysis, based on the basis of WFL2010, it was designed based on a centralized standing traveling wave ranging visualization of its network, and introduces database definition.Finally, based on the actual operation situation ultrahigh grid, constructs the rein wave ranging basic network structures in software and hardware on the were briefly reviewed in this paper.Through theoretical analyses and field operation shows that fault location of ultrahigh grid software of transient capture causing trouble at both ends of the traveling wave signal reaches moments, fast calculation results, and so has obvious rangefinder advantage, have broad application space.
