With continuous improvement of electronic technology, PLD (Programmable Logic Device) is developing to direction of higher integrated level, larger capacity, higher speed, lower power consumption and lower price. And huge superiority in areas of system control and digital signal processing has been shown by FPGA, which is a kind of PLD and widely used in civilian and military domains. Abundant resources, high parallel level and flexibility in design are main features of FPGA.This thesis, in which realization of phase-shifting beam forming on FPGA is researched, is based on XC4VLX15 FPGA of Xilinx Inc's Virtex-4 series. Beam forming is widely used to directionally transmit and incept signal, measure targets'direction in areas of radar, sonar, mobile communication, physic, and so on. Phase-shifting beam forming has brief structure, and system sampling can be greatly reduced by using shifted sideband beam forming. FIR (finite impulse response) filter and FFT (fast Fourier transform) are the main parts of the arithmetic. In the paper, parameters of the arithmetic are firstly confirmed by correct simulation in MATLAB. Then FPGA program of the arithmetic is designed and simulated. Besides of using IP (intellectual property) cores, FIR filter and FFT modules are designed in hardware description language. Two methods which are directly application of multiply-summation and DA (distributed arithmetic) are used in design of FIR filter. High-efficiency radix-4 FFT arithmetic, series-wound structure and block floating-point arithmetic are used in design of FFT module. Finally, the program of phase-shifting beam forming is debugged on hardware platform.Through functional simulation and hardware debug, programs in the thesis are proved to be correct.
