ZigBee technology is a representative of the low-complexity, short-range, low-speed, low-power, low-cost wireless communication technology standards. The realization of wireless voice communication is not the first goal of ZigBee, because it is a real-time data transmission.However, in many areas if voice communication is absent, it will be very much constrained applications; In addition, ZigBee has irreplaceable advantages in urgent need or layout difficult conditions, such as underground mine rescue and fire rescue. There will be a considerable impact, if we can achieve wireless voice communication by using ZigBee. Therefore this paper takes ZigBee as a wireless communication technology to realize wireless voice communication study.This paper introduces the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and ZigBee protocol specification, including the physical layer, MAC layer, network layer and application layer, and designs the solution of voice communication system based on ZigBee, and develops the hardware test platform of nodes of ZigBee voice communication network.The platform consists of control module using MSP430F149, which controls communications of the RF module, transmission of data and process of software; RF module using M-Power500, which modulates/demodulates signal, sends signals and receives signals, and voice module using CMX639, which codes the voice signal from the microphone and decodes the coded signal from the control module. The specific design of the circuit is given. The interface circuit of M-Power500 and MSP430F149 as well as the interface circuit of CMX639 and MSP430F149 is described in detail.The software design of the nodes of ZigBee voice communication network is introduced, including process of control module, ZigBee protocol stack and drives of M-Power500. Finally, brief introduction is given to some concepts related to ZigBee network. ZigBee star network is formed on the designed hardware test platformand to implement the voice communication, and the entire system is tested. The results show that the voice communication based on ZigBee technology can be achieved.
