With the development of the modern science and technology,new materials grow upcontinually. Although they meet the performance and broaden field of application,newproblems are following. It is difficult to machine by the conventional machiningprocesses, and composite materials and titanium alloys especially. As a versatiletechnique, abrasive water jet (AWJ) can overcomes these faults. AWJ is popular bypeople in the twenty years recently. The technology is becoming one of the fastest growingmachining processes. As a new manufacturing technique, AWJ is constituted by manyknowledges, and the machining process is very complex. Although it have been usedwidely in industry, there is little studies finished on the dynamic characteristics of the jetand abrasive.For explaining AWJ processes mechanisms,the study on the characteristicsof high-speed multi-phase jet is essential. The paper's detailed content as follows:(1) The multi-phase mixing processes in the mixing chamber is analysed,and themovement of single abrasive particle is also researched. Velocity model of single abrasiveparticle inside of tube is established. Different parameters influencing for particle areinvestigated. Foundation for designing of tube is supplied.(2) The abrasive distribution of boundary inside of the multi-phase flow is studied.The model of abrasive boundary into the multi-phase flow is established by thedimensional analysis technique. With the help of experiment,the further study of abrasiveboundary into the multi-phase flow is done, and the model is verified.(3)A new method of measuring the abrasive distribution of density is developed.Through analyzing the experiments result data, the abrasive particle density distribution'law inside of the multi-phase flow is found.(4) The AWJ machining process and mechanisms of kerf forming are presented.According to the study on multi-phase flow characteristics, the relationship betweenabrasive particle distribution of boundary and the wide of kerf are analysed. And then,the effect of distribution of abrasive particle density to the kerf forming is evaluated.Through the theoretical analysis and experimental research, the paper reveals theabrasive particles's characteristics into the multi-phase flow. The results of the paper are useful for machining and helpful for the further research on AWJ.
