In various digital communication systems, and computer storage, computing systems, channel coding techniques are often used to reduce error rate, as results, improving the communication quality to meet the reliability requirements for data transmission. Reed-Solomon Code is one of the excellent classes of forward error correction channel coding, especially in some cases, its performance is very close to the theoretical value. With both random error and burst error correcting ability of the structural features which determine that Reed-Solomon code is very suitable for correcting burst errors. This paper reviews channel encoding and decoding theory's development and classification, then detailed studies of Reed-Solomon code's algebraic theory and coding as well as decoding methods. What's more, this paper simulates the RS(16,12) shortened code's error correction performance under the conditions of AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels by using MATLAB.Based on software simulation and actual project experience of voice communications platform, the paper proposes a hardware implementation, then on the basis of a detailed study of Reed-Solomon encoding and decoding algorithm, successfully programming on TI company's DSP digital signal processor TMS320VC55xx.Even more, with the structure and characteristics of DSP hardware, analysis of the code optimization method. Finally, a brief introduction of advanced development and debugging DSP target programs, including CCS IDE development environment, DSP/BIOS real-time operating systems and using RTDX technology to achieve the target application and real-time data exchange between hosts and DSP. Test results show that the RS(16, 12) shortened code which is implemented on TMS320VC55xx DSP works properly and can meet the system real-time requirements.
