With the rapid development of the computer technology, research and production technology, the original manual management mode in the laboratory is not applicable. And for laboratories with high efficiency, regardless of size, large amounts of information is being generating all the time. In the past way, old mode based on hand-copy and paper data storage, which wastes the laboratory administrators and users a lot of manpower, material and time to maintain those massive information. In addition, this mode is inefficient and vulnerable because of making human errors, not only to rapid scientific management of data.As the product combined with computer technology, management science and analytical techniques, LIMS not only provide platform to be highly effective for the laboratory and scientific operation and preservation of information, communication and processing and the experimental office work in all segments of quantitative quality control.Using computer network technology and database technology, this dissertation introduced the whole process in the design, development and implementation of the Laboratory Information Management System for Shanghai Petrochemical Research Institute. For implementation, the distributed structure of Client / Server was used within the institute. The database used Oracle 10G, server and client used Windows platform. For some customers outside the institute, we set up the browser / server structure of customer service systems to meet needs of customers, checking the status of the submitted sample real-time. We standardized the laboratory business processes and linked most of the instruments to the network, so we can collect and submit the analysis of data automatically.Using Crystal Report software make reports to show the final results. The database design, network architecture design, laboratory process mapping, report design and WEB page query and display design and so on are displayed in detail. In particular, laboratory process mapping and equipment integration could provide a lot of valuable experience in the research-based unit. At last, this paper summarizes some points which should be paid attention to during the implementation of the LIMS and prospects the broader practical prospects for the implementation of LIMS.
